In a Montauk Minute

If you’ve ever heard of “Coastal Grandma,” look no further than places like Montauk or Martha’s Vineyard for the physical embodiment of this aesthetic.

The people and fashion that live within New England’s coastline captivates America’s attention. Let’s explore a few of these infamous coastal towns and see how their personalities have manifested in their fashion.

The Hamptons

New York City’s direct outlet to nature. Like its parent city, the Hamptons cannot be boxed into one category of style. Similar to the city, its inhabitants are a diverse range of people, from locals to old money to artists. A themed party is always on the calendar out east, either hosting or attending events such as: ‘White’ parties, Fourth of July Bashes, and Gallery Openings.

At the Fishel Estate, Social Life Magazine is seen hosting a celebratory polo match. The scene evokes images of the polished American brand Ralph Lauren. Match attendants, however, were sporting LoveShackFancy florals and ostentatious hats.

Further down Long Island, away from the parties, are the surfers of Montauk, who, according to the New York Times, opt for “proudly low-key” fashions.

CAPE COD

The Kennedys are as synonymous with American debonair as they are enshrouded with mystique, famous for their sharp and preppy dress style. The family has held a compound in Hyannis Port for over fifty years, and their impact is evident.

Local retail boutique Lexaco says of its influence, “One cannot discuss Cape Cod fashion history without mentioning the profound influence of the Kennedy family.”

The town’s fashion is clean, crisp, and adorned with nautical details. Here, you’d be hard-pressed to find someone not ready to hop on a sailboat at a moment's notice.

MARTHA’S VINEYEARD

An island off Massachusetts, is named for this country’s matriarch, Martha Washington. Given its prestige, one could presume these islanders thrive in Vineyard Vines or anything kitschy prep—which is incorrect.

Per Martha’s Vineyard Times, “Anyone who’s spent more than an afternoon on this Island knows that’s a far-off presumption.”

Despite its famous admirers, Martha’s Vineyard “can be a pretty casual place,”  filled with subdued and effortless styles. Even special occasion outfits will have laidback elements, like linen fabric or a muted palette. The people here dress in clothes that commit to being bohemian and island-like… well, as much as their New England heritage will allow them to.

From these iconic places, a single throughline can be found: the persistence of the American spirit and the many forms it takes.
